Resisting Christian Nationalism

Hoosiers Working for Religious Freedom

We organize Hoosiers to defend pluralism, oppose Christian nationalism, and protect the freedom to worship, doubt, or disbelieve without coercion.

Act justly, love mercy, walk humbly

Micah 6:8

Who We Are

Religious Freedom Indiana (RFI) is a statewide coalition of Hoosiers who affirm that religious freedom is a right belonging to all, and that, in making and enforcing laws, government should not favor any interpretation based on one religious belief. RFI was founded in April 2025 to educate about and to firmly but non-violently oppose Christian nationalism and other extremist beliefs that conflate religion and democracy.

Where We're Headed

We envision a state and a nation governed by law without regard to religious beliefs, where every individual can freely worship, doubt, or disbelieve without facing fear, stigma, or coercion; where no government action favors one religion over others; and where all contribute to the common good.

Why We Exist

Movements advocating religious nationalism, whether Christian, Islamic, Jewish, or secular, weaponize faith to dominate other groups holding a different faith or no faith. Christian nationalism is particularly prevalent at the current time. This ideology distorts history, undermines democracy, and replaces persuasion with coercion.

We oppose statements that express ideas such as these:

  • The U.S. government should declare America a Christian nation.
  • U.S. laws should be based on biblical Christian values.
  • Being Christian is an important part of being truly American.
  • God has called Christians to exercise dominion over all areas of American society.

What We Do

  • Educate the public with accurate, accessible resources about U.S. history and constitutional principles, especially separation of church and state.
  • Expose and counter harmful disinformation, for example, myths of a "Christian nation," conspiracies about stolen elections, and slander of immigrants.
  • Defend individuals and communities whose freedoms are under threat.
  • Foster dialogue across beliefs, especially by engaging those who believe authoritarian Christian ideologies.
  • Inspire action by training people to peacefully and effectively advocate in local governments, school boards, legislatures, and voting booths.

Our Core Values

Principles Practices
Freedom We persuade respectfully; we never impose beliefs.
Humility We stay teachable; absolute certainty fuels injustice.
Truth Evidence matters; ideology alone is insufficient.
Pluralism All people and identities welcomed.
Non-partisanship We encourage critique of policies and actions, not political parties.
Non-violence We encourage dialogue; we don't engage in threats, intimidation, and violence.
